OLD SAYBROOK — A man and woman were rescued Sunday evening in Long Island Sound. Ten people were out on the boat anchored in Long Island Sound near Old Saybrook. A woman jumped in for a swim, when she was overcome by the current and called for help around 8 p.m.

That’s when, police say, the captain of the boat grabbed two life jackets and jumped into the water. He reached the woman and put the life jacket on her. But the pair was unable to get back onto the boat due to the current.

The Old Saybrook Fire and Police Departments responded to search the water. The US Coast Guard also joined in the search. In total, ten rescue vessels and two helicopters responded when the Goshen Fire Rescue vessel located the pair in the water.

Just after 10 p.m. the pair was located and rescued the people in the water approximately 1/4 mile off of the Old Saybrook lighthouse in Long Island Sound.

Police say the pair was in the water for over two hours but they refused medical treatment.
