WEST SPRINGFIELD--It's the 99th anniversary of New England's joint state fair!

The Big E opened on Friday amid tons of buzz and big crowds.

More than 1 million visitors usually trek through the livestock, unusual food vendors and rides, and this year isn't expected to be any different.

People from as far as Ohio and Virginia were on hand Friday for the opening day of the fair, and to participate in competition!

Besides food, animals and rides, there are also two stages that will host more than 70 free shows, including concerts, demonstrations and other events.

There's also a lot of new items to test your taste buds: "This year we have almost two pages that identify all the new products we have on the fairgrounds," said Gene Cassidy, the president of the Big E.

Besides fried martinis, oreos and apple pie, there are also some more savory additions to the menu. "We also have the crazy burger," Cassidy said, "and one of my favorites is fried cheese curds, which is something you can only really get at the fair."

The Big E runs from September 18 through October 4. Admission costs $15 for a single-day adult pass and $10 for a single-day pass for kids aged 6 to 12. You can also buy passes to go an unlimited number times throughout the fair's run.
