Despite the prolonged drought plaguing the state, the Department of Agriculture says the crop is “very strong” this season, which is good news since apples are one of the state’s largest crops.

“The dry conditions actually serve to create an intense flavor in the apples,” said Kelliher, owner of Easy Pickin’s Orchard in Enfield. “Growers have been able to irrigate enough to ensure an excellent crop, so everyone will be able to find their favorite varieties at their local orchard.”

And now it will be easier than ever to find your favorite variety. The Department of Agriculture’s CT Apple Marketing Board has created a free mobile app that shows customers information on orchards across the state.

The app has an interactive map that links users to orchards’ websites directly for information on directions, hours and apple varieties. There is also a customer-loyalty program through the app that offers discounts for customers who make four visits to any Connecticut orchard. Also offered is a children’s passport with fun and educational activities.

The app was made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Connecticut Department of Agriculture.

CAMB also has Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram accounts that provide information.
