HARTFORD – On Monday, August 31, just before midnight, Hartford police responded to reports of a man shot at 52-K South Prospect Street.

Upon arrival, William Prieto, 32, of South Prospect Street in Hartford, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding paramedics just after 12:30 a.m. on September 1.

The suspect was identified as Anthony Christiana, 28, of Henry Street in Hartford. He is charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and firearms charges. He was picked up and arrested for the unrelated charge of probation violation on Tuesday.

On Thursday morning, he was arrested for the murder of William Prieto, and is being held on a $1 million bail.

Police say the motive was drugs and money, and the investigation is ongoing.

Christiana is a convicted felon with nine previous Hartford arrests, with several drug-related convictions and several pending drug cases.

The shooting, near the federal courthouse and City Hall, was the city’s 23rd homicide of the year.

Hartford has 26 homicides this year — the highest total in all of New England including Boston.
