NEWPORT, R.I.-- Sip, sample, and savor.

In a coastal town known for its opulence and indulgence, there seems to be a taste for a more organic experience in Newport.

Just a few months ago, longtime local Paula Silva began the Rhode Island Red Food Tours, which she describes as a roving dinner conversation. The tour takes visitors on a walking tour through a historic Newport neighborhood, with history and a new taste at every turn.

"There's more to Newport than just sailing and mansions," Silva said. "We have great food and a great culture here."

The tour strolls through the historic Newport area known as the Broadway and Washington Square neighborhood, which showcases the colonial architecture that the "City by the Sea" is famous for. Notable culinary stops take groups to Mission, famous for hamburgers and homemade hot dogs slathered in slaw; Van Gogh Pizza, which takes the creative slice seriously; and a visit to the famed centuries-old White Horse Tavern for a wonton-wrapped cheesecake.

"What you find on the tour is a little more creativity," Silva said. "The goal is to share that local flavor."

The Rhode Island Red Food Tours run on Fridays and Saturdays, and private group tours are also available. The cost is $62 per person, and the tour season runs from May through November.
