DURHAM -- The Friday night lights shined brightly at the Durham Fairgrounds as thousands came to kick off a weekend of fried foods, animals, rides and games.

"We have something for everyone," remarked Debbie Huscher, the fair's marketing sirector.

One of the biggest attractions this year is a record breaking pumpkin and monster watermelon, which tipped the scales at 192.5 pounds.

The fair is celebrating its 96th year with marquee attractions and a special performance by country music star Martina McBride.

Some people had been concerned over the booking of the band "Confederate Railroad," which uses Confederate battle flag imagery as part of its logo.

Organizers released the following statement in response:

"The Association has no position, opinion, or perspective on the topic.  Each member likely has his or her own thoughts on the issues, and there is no one individual who could speak fairly for everyone."

The fair runs through Sunday night.
