MERIDEN--People gathered in Meriden on Monday to celebrate local Latino leaders.

October is Hispanic heritage month, and Rep. Elizabeth Esty hosted a ceremony for community activists, educators and students from across the state.

Five individuals were singled out for their dedication to the Latino community.

"We don't often enough stand back and recognize the accomplishments of our friends and neighbors," said Dr. Nieva Torres, superintendent of the CT Technical High School System.
