VERNON–The Vernon Police Department issued a statement on Wednesday saying that it was incorrect in calling a telemarketing scheme a scam.

On Tuesday, police warned residents about solicitation scheme that was claiming to be raising money for the police department’s K-9 unit. They categorized it as a scam, but on Wednesday released a statement that it is actually legitimate. The fundraising is being done through the Connecticut Police Work Dog Association, which the Vernon Police is a part of. The organization raises money to train K-9s and get more equipment.

The CPWDA is the one who was making the phone calls soliciting money from local businesses, but police did say that no homes were being called, so if you receive a call at your residence be wary.

A local effort to raise money to get a second K-9 unit is also underway and making phone calls. It is spearheaded by Lisa Moody and other residents in honor of the department’s 125th anniversary.

if you want to donate to the legitimate fund, you can do so by sending a check to payable to the Vernon Police Department at 725 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon, Connecticut 06066. Checks should be made payable to “Town of Vernon, Police Dog Fund.”
