OLD SAYBROOK -- State Police have fatally shot a man accused of pointing a gun at officers at an Old Saybrook motel.

The incident happened at the Econo Lodge Inn and Suites on Boston Post Road around 1 a.m.

According to State Police, officers from The Old Saybrook Police Department and The Norwich Police Department, responded to the motel in an attempt to locate a suspect who was the focus of several investigations. Upon arrival, officers saw the suspect through a motel room brandishing a firearm and shots were heard.

Officers on scene requested assistance from state police. Authorities evacuated motel guests and staff while they entered the building.

Once the State Police Tactical Team entered the room, the suspect pointed their firearm at them. The suspect ignored orders from the tactical team members to drop the weapon. One of the tactical team members discharged their weapon, striking the suspect.

State Police rendered first aid to the suspect but emergency medical personnel pronounced the suspect dead on scene.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has yet to release the identity of the suspect.
