OLD SAYBROOK — A bank robbery suspect has been identified as the suspect shot and killed by state police Saturday.

Richard P. Love, 31, of Groton was fatally shot after police said he pointed a gun at officers at an Old Saybrook motel.

State Police said the early Saturday morning incident began when police were notified that a suspect who was the focus of several investigations was at the motel. State Police say responding officers from Old Saybrook and Norwich saw the suspect through a window brandishing a firearm and shots were heard.

Motel rooms were evacuated and members of the State Police Tactical Team ordered the unidentified suspect to drop his weapon. Police say he pointed a gun at officers and ignored their orders.

Through the course of the initial investigation it was determined that two members of the Connecticut State Police Emergency Services Unit Tactical Team discharged their issued firearm striking Love, who was declared dead at the scene.

The officers involved in the shooting were Trooper First Class Daniel McCarthy, a 23-year veteran of the Connecticut State Police and Trooper First Class Carson Konow, an 8-year veteran of the Connecticut State Police.

Police said they also seized about 180 bundles of heroin and suspected crack cocaine, and drug paraphernalia that were located inside the motel room.

A large amount of cash was also found that is believed to be related to several bank robberies in southeast Connecticut and Rhode Island, according to police.

Police also located a .45 caliber handgun and magazines loaded with ammunition.

Love was considered a suspect in several bank robberies.

This is an active investigation and the State Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.
