Deputy Fire Chief Ron Mullen was struck on the railroad tracks in Branford, near Pine Orchard Road around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

“Over his nearly four decade career, he was one of the most respected Incident Commanders, fire investigators, and educators in the state,” the fire department posted on its Facebook page.

Mullen joined the department in 1976 and became part of the career staff in 1981.

The department said details of arrangements will be announced when they become available.

All trains through that section of railroad were stopped Wednesday night while the investigation was ongoing.

Details about the accident and why Mullen was on the tracks were not available.
