HARTFORD -- Kerry Patton, Director of Health & Wellness at Quinnipiac University, joined Fox CT Morning Extra to talk about a very common reaction for students adjusting to college as freshmen.

She had tips for students and parents to cope with the changes.

Student tips:

  1. Understand that the feeling is normal
  2. Familiarize yourself with the campus and surrounding area.
  3. Get involved in organizations/activities
  4. Utilize resources at school (residential life, counseling, health center, academic support)
  5. Connect with family and friends from home (do not make home connections the sole contacts)

Parent Tips:

  1. Allow the student to develop independence
  2. Support the feelings, do not RESCUE
  3. Encourage involvement with others, activities, organizations.
  4. Limit facilitating all of the phone calls to resources on campus, encourage independence.
