Construction worker dies after chimney fall at Yale

NEW HAVEN  —  A worker who fell 60 feet into a confined space on Saturday died from his injuries.

Yale University Police initially responded to calls of a crisis situation at the Central Power Plant on 120 Tower Parkway, shortly before 10:30 a.m .

According to fire officials, a 53-year-old workman fell into a smokestack while working in the construction zone.

New Haven respondents requested Hamden rescue squads to aid in the recovery efforts. Emergency teams worked for over an hour before extricating the victim and removing him from the area.

They say he was on a ladder inside the chimney when he fell.

Crews opened the side of the chimney to get him out.

He was transported via ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he died a short time later.

A spokeswoman for Yale University says an active investigation is continuing into the incident bu she did not give further details.
