OXFORD — A lawyer has pleaded guilty in the theft of more than $1.8 million from the estate of an Oxford woman who died in July 2010.
Prosecutors say 57-year-old Peter Clark of Woodbury pleaded guilty Monday to mail fraud in federal court in New Haven.
Authorities say Clark took the money for his own use after Miriam Strong assigned him as an executor to her will. Strong, who never married and had no children, left $1.6 million for scholarships for Oxford students, $821,000 for a new library and $821,000 to buy open space, as well as religious and charitable organizations.
Clark was arrested in May. He has been released on $500,000 bond and is scheduled to be sentenced in January. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment and a maximum fine of more than $3.6 million.
Clark has also agreed to pay restitution of $1,828,987.
