SOUTHBURY–A state representative has been arrested after police say he crashed into another car while driving drunk.

On Wednesday night at 11:37, State Police responded to reports of a crash on I-84 east near exit 25.

Police say the investigation revealed that Victor Cuevas, 51, of Waterbury, was driving on the highway when and he didn’t slow down when the cars in front of him did due to traffic. He crashed into the car that was driving in front of him.

Police suspected he may have been driving under the influence, and asked Cuevas to perform field sobriety tests. He was unable to do the tests properly, so he was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol and failure to drive at a reasonable distance.

Bond was set at $500, and he is due in court on November 10.

Cuevas, a Democrat, was first elected to the 75th district, which represents Waterbury, in 2012, and took office in 2013. He previously worked as a high school business education teacher, counselor and adjunct professor at Naugatuck Community College. In addition to being the city’s representative, he is also the recreational director for Waterbury.
