HARTFORD — State legislators and Gov. Dan Malloy say they still need to agree on the size of Connecticut’s current budget deficit before bipartisan talks can produce a plan to balance the state’s books.
Democratic and Republican lawmakers met privately with the Democratic governor for about an hour on Monday. They called the meeting cordial and professional, despite recent partisan crossfire.
They expect to meet again early next week.
Malloy last week called for bipartisan talks after his budget office said the current $20 billion budget is $120 million in deficit. That comes after Malloy made $103 million in cuts a few months into the new fiscal year.
Lawmakers have balked at those cuts, which hit hospital and human services programs. Family members of disabled people urged lawmakers to protect the funding.
