COCOA, Fla.–One Florida police officer is being praised for his efforts to save three pit bulls from a sewer drain.

At 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Officer Matt Rush was driving when he heard dogs barking in distress, according to the Cocoa Police Department’s Facebook page. He pulled over and found three dogs stuck in a sewer drain on the side of the highway.

“My first thought was how in the world did they get in there and how did I manage to hear them,” Officer Rush said.

Officer Rush called in animal control officers to help rescue the dogs, and during the rescue they realized the storm grate needed to be removed, so Cocoa Fire Rescue was called in, WFTV reported.

Firefighters were able to remove the gates and the dogs were safely rescued and handed over to Brevard County Animal Services.

Officer Rush said, “I think they may have gotten in from a manhole across the street. It appears they dug their way in and then got stuck. Fortunately they came out in good shape.”
