SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — MGM’s top executive says more design changes are in store for the company’s $800 million Springfield but none he would deem major.
MGM Resorts International chief executive James Murren joined Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno at City Hall Thursday in an effort to mend fences.
The company has come under fire for significant design changes including the elimination of a hotel tower and an overall reduction of the size of the project by about 14 percent.
Sarno had supported cutting out the hotel tower but says the size reduction that was disclosed in a state agency filing caught him by surprise.
Following a private meeting with Sarno, Murren publicly apologized Thursday for the miscommunication and emphasized MGM remains committed to the Springfield casino, which it hopes to open in 2018.
