HARTFORD — Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is questioning the constitutionality of Connecticut’s law that established a multi-step process for a possible new tribal casino to blunt out-of-state competition.
Holder is now a partner in a law firm representing MGM Resorts International, which plans to build an $800 million casino in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Holder sent a letter this week to state Attorney General George Jepsen, urging him to help lawmakers “find constitutionally permissible means” to promote economic growth “without depriving others of the opportunity to compete on a level playing field.”
The letter was released Friday by a public relations firm representing MGM.
A spokeswoman for Jepsen says officials in the attorney general’s office disagree with Holder’s legal conclusions on behalf of his client, MGM, which is suing Connecticut.
