Often getting a "bat" rap, DEEP wants to separate fact from fiction about bats.
Myths include the common perception that bats are nothing but flying mice. However, bats are actually the only mammal which can truly fly and are more closely related to primates.
Bats also don't seek to get tangled up in people's hair. And the saying "blind as a bat" is false because they actually have good eyesight.
DEEP wildlife biologist Jenny Dickson says bats do the exact opposite of bugging us.
"They're providing about a billion dollars worth of free insect control annually in the United States."
DEEP also wants to point out this Halloween that Connecticut's bat population is being decimated by White Nose Syndrome. About 8 in 10 will likely get it.
