STRATFORD — Federal and state environmental officials are set to announce nearly two dozen grants worth $1.3 million to improve the environmental health of Long Island Sound.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Long Island Sound Study and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are scheduled to gather Thursday in Stratford to announce 22 grants to local government and community groups in New York and Connecticut. It’s part of the Long Island Sound Futures Fund grant program.
The grants are for projects for clean water, wildlife protection and healthy watersheds and habitat.
New York and Connecticut established the Long Island Sound Study in 1985. Nine years later, the project completed a conservation and management plan identifying issues such as toxic contamination, floatable debris and land use and development.
