CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A woman has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after authorities say she shot and killed her mother and then sent a picture of the body to her father’s phone.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that Rachel Hutson was sentenced in Chesapeake Circuit Court on Tuesday. She had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a felony in June.
According to court documents, Hutson called her father and said she had shot her 58-year-old mother in 2013 at the family’s home. She then sent a photo of her mother’s body to her father’s cellphone.
Hutson testified that she had been a caregiver for her seriously ill mother. She said in court that she had planned to kill herself, but thought her suicide would be too hard on her mom, so she killed her instead.
