Tractor trailer slams into New Haven bridge, gets stuck

NEW HAVEN — Monday afternoon a tractor trailer, carrying a load of forklifts, got stuck beneath the James Street railroad crossing in New Haven just before 1 p.m. It’s the second time in two months a tractor trailer has gotten stuck beneath the 12’1″ overpass. The last accident took approximately five hours to clear, which is not good news for the Monday rush-hour.

The truck driver, whose trailer is over 13 feet tall, tells FOX 61 he did not see the sign cautioning how high the bridge was until it was too late.

A law-enforcement official says it would be best if caution sign was moved from the side of the road to being mounted directly on the bridge.

The driver said he was not hurt in the accident, which peeled part of the roof off of the trailer.

The accident has not disrupted train service, however trains are now required to travel at no more than 5 mph across the overpass until the accident is cleared and the train tracks are checked for structural integrity.
