BOSTON — Red Sox slugger David Ortiz has decided to retire at the end of the 2016 season, according to FOX Sports. Wednesday is Big Papi’s 40th Birthday and he is expected to make a public announcement.

Ortiz has played 19 seasons in the major leagues, the last 13 with the Red Sox.  He signed with the Sox in 2003 after being released by the Minnesota Twins.

He was a member of the 2004, 2007, and 2013 World Series champions and was the MVP in 2013.  He is also the 27th MLB player to hit 500 homers.

Ortiz has become a fan favorite over the years in Boston and was a source of strength for the city after the Boston Marathon bombings. In the first game after the terror attack, he gave an impassioned speech that has been viewed online millions of times.
