WEST HARTFORD — The president of the University of Hartford says he plans to retire in 2017 after nearly two decades with the school.

Walter Harrison has led the school since July of 1998.

The university said Friday that the 69-year-old Harrison announced he will retire in June 2017 when his current five-year contract expires. Harrison said in a message to campus that the job has been his life’s highest privilege.

The school in West Hartford was chartered in 1957 and enrolls nearly 5,300 undergraduate and, 1,700 graduate students.
