If you are traveling abroad or plan to travel in the next several weeks, the State Department is warning you to be vigilant.
The department has issued a worldwide travel alert based on information that suggests ISIS, al-Qaida, Boko Haram and other terrorist organizations are planning attacks in multiple regions of the world.
“Authorities believe the likelihood of terror attacks will continue” as members of ISIS return to the West from Syria and Iraq, the alert says. “Additionally, there is a continuing threat from unaffiliated persons planning attacks inspired by major terrorist organizations but conducted on an individual basis. Extremists have targeted large sporting events, theatres, open markets, and aviation services.”
The travel alert lasts through February 24, 2016.
The department recommends being extra aware while in public places or while using public transportation. It also recommends avoiding large crowds, especially during the holiday season and at holiday events.
You should also give yourself extra time while traveling since additional security screening is expected.
