Navin was brought in from a federal prison in Rhode Island late Tuesday morning, and he said nothing inside the Fairfield County Courthouse in Bridgeport. The state and his lawyer, Gene Riccio, agreed prior to Navin’s appearance that his murder case would be continued until December 16, at which time Riccio can either request a probable cause hearing or have Navin enter a plea.

Navin, 27, is facing two counts of murder and two counts of murder with special circumstances. He was first arrested on September 8 for federal firearms charges and has been denied bail since. Navin is being held on $2.5 million bond.

After Navin’s hearing, his attorney, Eugene Riccio said on December 16 he will either request a probable cause hearing or his client will enter a plea.

Earlier Tuesday, Jennifer Valiante pleaded not guilty to charges in connection with the deaths of her boyfriend’s parents.

“Not guilty, your honor,” said Valiante when Judge Robert Devlin asked for her plea.

“We requested a jury trial and that the judge set a preliminary pretrial conference date for January the 12th,” said Valiante’s lawyer, Elliot Warren.

Warren says he would describe Valiante’s mental state at this point as being very good and that she is “maintaining her innocence. She has adjusted in jail, as much as she can. She’s in touch with her family.”

Valiante, 31, of Westport, is Kyle Navin’s girlfriend. She was charged with conspiracy to commit murder and hindering prosecution. She is being held on a $2 million bond. In her court appearance on Tuesday, Valiante elected to have a jury trial. She is scheduled to appear next on January 12, however the process could take a year or more before jury selection begins.
