HARTFORD -- Authorities in Avon, Torrington and South Daytona, Florida are investigating a photo of alleged animal abuse that has gone viral.

A woman allegedly posted the photo of a dog with its mouth taped shut on Facebook.

The photo, posted by Katie Brown, was shared more almost 300,000 times as of 8 p.m. Eastern time  Saturday, and the City of South Daytona posted a series of updates on their Facebook page thanking concerned citizens for their efforts but asking people to stop calling, as the reports were beginning to overwhelm dispatch operations.

Brown listed her residence as South Daytona, Florida and has ties to Connecticut. It's believed she lived in Avon. Both police departments said the incident did not happen in their jurisdiction. Avon police issued a statement on Monday that said they were actively investigating the case.

There is some question as to the origins of the photo, and now Torrington Animal Control is involved.
