WASHINGTON — Black Friday set a record for the number of firearms background check requests received by the FBI.

The FBI says it processed 185,345 gun background checks last Friday, more than two a second.

FBI background checks are required for gun purchases from federally licensed gun dealers and for permits to carry guns. A background check does not mean that a gun was purchased.

The FBI started processing background checks for potential gun owners in 1998.

The record volume of background checks came the same day that three people were killed and nine others wounded in shooting at a Planned Parenthood office in Colorado.

President Barack Obama renewed calls for changes to gun laws to limit access to weapons in the wake of the shootings.
