NEW HAVEN  —  Firefighters responded to a fire at a three-story New Haven home early Sunday.

Emergency respondents arrived on scene at 153 Clay Street, where thick smoke poured into the sky and large, outwardly visible flames threatened nearby structures. A two-alarm response was initiated due to the fire’s size and close proximity to other habitable areas.

The New Haven Fire Chief indicated no rescues were necessary and that tenants had all self-evacuated. It is unknown how many people were actually inside the home at the time, but officials say 27 occupants from two buildings were displaced. There were no reports of injuries.

Crews worked throughout the morning to extinguish the fire while protecting the homes on either side of the building. By 7:30 a.m., the majority of the fire was knocked down, although work continued on hotspots due to high risk of exposure with other structures.

The New Haven Fire Department is conducting an investigation to determine the cause.

The American Red Cross is helping seven families, including 16 adults and three children, providing assistance to meet these families’ immediate needs.
