GROTON – Police investigated possible threats between students at Fitch High School in Groton Friday morning.
Police were called to the school around 9:15 a.m. and the incident was over by 11:30 a.m., according to Michael H. Graner, Groton’s schools superintendent.
Groton Police were alerted to disturbing comments overheard by a student at the school.
The investigation revealed that while walking in the hallway during change of class, a student overheard another student make a remark about a student possessing a firearm in the school.
Concerned for the safety of themselves and others, the student reported what they had heard to the School Resource Officer and school administrators who ordered the lockdown.
There was a heavy police presence at the school but Graner said there was no indication of a weapon in the school, and that ultimately the situation was the result of a misunderstanding.
“It was an unfortunate misunderstanding that we responded to with a huge amount of caution,” Graner said. “There was never any threat.”
Groton police checked the school for weapons and State Police who were conducting a drill nearby also assisted.
There were no injuries to any students nor staff, and no weapon was found.
One student is being interviewed by officials at the school and the superintendent said it is unlikely any punitive action will be taken against him.
Graner also said he was impressed with the maturity and cooperation of the Fitch HS schools in dealing with the issue. Parents were notified of what transpired.
