HARTFORD – A state trooper was injured and two men were arrested after an early morning vehicle pursuit and foot chase in Hartford on Wednesday.

Just after 1 a.m., state police were on patrol in the area of Capital Avenue and Broad Street in the City of Hartford when police tried  pull over a car for improper registration. The car refused to stop and led police on a chase for almost five miles.

The car crashed on I-84 East in the area of Exit 49 in Hartford. Following the crash, the car’s passenger stayed in the car while the driver ran away. Other police arrived to help and chased the suspect on foot towards the Exit 48 off-ramp.

While in pursuit, a trooper fell approximately 10-12 feet over a concrete barrier on the highway off-ramp. He was taken to Hartford Hospital by a Hartford police officer. As a result of the fall, he sustained a fractured left leg and a fractured left ankle.The fleeing suspect was later caught.

Troopers seized suspected drugs from the car and from the suspect who ran away, who also injured his ankle while jumping over the concrete barrier on the highway off-ramp. He was taken to Hartford Hospital  where he was treated and released for a swollen ankle.

Trevor McCarthy, 22, of Locust Street in Bristol and Kevin Allen, 26, of Waynewright Drive in New Britain were both taken into custody.

McCarthy is charged with engaging police in pursuit, operating under the influence, reckless driving, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, interfering with police, reckless endangerment, evading responsibility – serious property damage, second-degree criminal trespass, distribution of a controlled substance within 1,500 feet of a school, iIllegal possession of narcotics, possession of marijuana, improper use of a marker plate, failure to have insurance,  failure to drive in proper lane, failure to obey a traffic control signal, and failure to obey a stop sign.

He was held on $100,000 bail and was due in court later Wednesday.

Allen is charged with possession of narcotics with intent to sell, possession of narcotics, and possession of marijuana.

He was held on $50,000 bail and was due in Hartford Superior Court Wednesday.
