MYSTIC-- Mystic might be known for its legendary tall ships and opulent aquarium, but there is a new place that is taking the town to new heights.

The carnival atmosphere at Fearless Flyers Academy is by design, and it's a contagious taste of Cirque du Soleil right by the seaport.

Fearless Flyers is a place where you can learn the art of the flying trapeze.

"We teach from scratch, we can teach anyone and everyone," said Don Dinh, who opened Fearless Flyers in a custom-built warehouse with his wife Ally just a few months ago.

The cavernous space includes a full trapeze rig, trampolines and an area to learn the elegant discipline of the aerial silks.

"It's really unique that we're able to do this," Ally Dinh added.

First-time trapeze flyers get a full orientation before they take off and are safety-roped into a snug-fitting harness.

Don said, "If they have an interest in learning how to become an acrobat or just want to check something off their bucket list, we're the place to be."

Amanda Frances, one of the trapeze coaches, said, "Teaching people to face their fears is my favorite part."

And there is some fear involved for those afraid of heights -- the trapeze platform is perched 21 feet in the air. Still, since you're swaddled in the harness, you do feel secure once you hop off from the edge.

"It's exhilarating for people," Ally said.

Amanda added, "You'll never forget your first time and hopefully you will never stop."

Fearless Flyers Academy is located at 800 Flanders Rd. in Mystic and is open Thursday through Monday. There are extended days over the holidays.

Classes are offered for all skill levels and cost $45 on weekdays and $55 on weekends. To find out more click here here.
