HARTFORD--Some VIPs came out in Hartford Tuesday night to celebrate local kids.

Former UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun and Mayor-elect Luke Bronin joined hundreds of kids to hand out basketballs to each and every one. But the presents didn't stop there--Calhoun signed all of them!

During the event Calhoun spoke about the importance of perseverance in all parts of life, not just in sports.

After the event, Bronin said, "I think [Calhoun's] message in there was a powerful one. You know, talking to the kids about the importance of working hard, staying focused, and never giving up on yourself."

In all, 450 basketballs were donated. Any extras will be given to area community and athletic groups.
