HARTFORD--It's one of the mildest starts to winter in recent memory and the warmer temperatures have caused many people to drop their guard when it comes to gearing up their cars for cold weather.

As Connecticut prepares for the first winter blast of the season on Tuesday, AAA has some tips for you to make sure your car is ready for the low temperatures and wintry elements:

  • Check the battery
  • Check the tire pressure
  • Check headlights, tail lights, brake lights
  • Check windshield wipers
  • Check heater/defroster
  • Check oil/fluids
  • Prepare an emergency kit

As temperatures fall below freezing, it takes a battery 1 1/2 times as much power to start a car. AAA is expecting a spike in roadside assistance calls due to the colder weather.

It's the calm before the storm, so be prepared for the colder weather and make sure that your car is ready for the ever-changing elements that come along with winter.
