NEW HARTFORD -- Ski areas all over the state, and the region, have had to face a cold, harsh reality in the form of unseasonably warm temperatures, ruining profits for the typically-busy Christmas and New Year's weeks.
Finally, the much needed cold winds of change have come into the region, providing ski areas the chance to fire up the snow guns.
At Ski Sundown, all 200 snow guns were in motion on Monday, feverishly blowing snow over all of their trails.
"I am so excited, we are finally getting into this," said Sundown's owner, Bob Switzgable. "It's been a long, long fall and winter is finally here."
Switzgable said Sundown lost its entire revenue during Christmas and New Year's, and now plans to open the mountain on Friday, January 8.
"This is absolutely unprecedented," Switzgable added. "We've never been opened this late or had such a late start, this is new for us."
As the brown and green ski runs continue to turn white, Lori Shield, Sundown's marketing manager, said they are looking to the weeks ahead.
"We live in southern New England, you have to be prepared for just about anything," she said. "But when we get temperatures like this, we're in business."
