WATERBURY-- A nineteen-year-old woman from Beacon Falls died in a multi-vehicle accident on I-84 east in Waterbury Wednesday night which closed a portion of the highway at exit 23 for hours.
Casey Lynne Giannone, a passenger in one of the cars involved, was killed as a result of the crash.
At 9:30 p.m. last night, State Police responded to a pile-up that included more than a dozen vehicles, many of which were tractor trailers. One truck catching fire in the accident that happened between exits 23 and 25.
About an hour and a half earlier, around 8:00 p.m. near exit 25, there was a water main break. A pipe broke on Harper's Ferry Road and leaked from the bridge onto I-84 east. Department of Transportation did salt the area last night as temperatures were well below freezing.
However, it was determined the water main break and subsequent ice were unrelated to this crash and was about a mile away.
