NEW HAVEN -- It's been a relatively mild winter but that could all change this weekend as a nor'easter develops along the east coast.

People all over the state are preparing for the snowy forecast. In Bridgeport, officials are holding a public briefing to discuss how the city plans to handle the weekend conditions.

Accumulations could be as little as a dusting up to a foot of snow or more. The shoreline is expected to get the brunt of the storm but forecast models are changing hour by hour.

So, there is no better time than now to prepare for the season's first big snowfall here in Connecticut.

The Red Cross has some important tips for you in advance of the forecast storm:

-Emergency kit for entire family (pets included): Have warm clothes, blankets, can opener, canned food, water, flashlight, battery-powered radio with extra batteries in case of an outage and all medication taken daily.

-Heed the warnings: A winter storm warning means life-threatening conditions have begun - so stay tuned to Fox61 on air and online for up-to-the-minute information.

-Save your back: Take precautions with snow removal as it's strenuous work - take plenty of breaks. If you use a snow thrower, keep hands and feet away from moving parts and never use your hand to clear blockage. If you have a fire hydrant on your property, make sure to clear around it.

-House prep: Keep all vents around the exterior of your home clear of snow. This will keep air flowing and prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. If you lose power and heat, run water at a trickle from the faucet to help prevent pipes from freezing. If you have a generator, never use it inside your home, basement, garage or any partially-enclosed area. Place it outside as carbon monoxide can build quickly. If you feel sick or dizzy get fresh air immediately and call for help.

-Dress for success: The forecast is calling for cold temperatures and windy conditions with gust up to 40 or 50 miles an hour so bundle up. If you are outside, wear plenty of layers and use a hat, scarf, mittens or gloves.
