CORNWALL — A 11-year-old Newtown girl hit a tree while skiing just before 2 p.m. Saturday at Mohawk Mountain in Cromwell.

Emergency respondents initially rushed the victim to Sharon Hospital via ambulance, where doctors diagnosed her with a concussion and broken clavicle.

While doctors were able to identify her initial injuries, they grew concerned about the size and impact of the blow. They determined special equipment was necessary to check for any potentially unseen brain trauma.

A Lifestar helicopter was then dispatched to Sharon to airlift the victim to Hartford Hospital as a precautionary measure. She was treated and released after medical staff concluded her concussion was not life-threatening.

The girl’s father told FOX 61 that she’s since returned to normal, although he is still personally shaken up over the ordeal.

“It’s the phone call you never want to get as a father,” he said. “The call that your daughter needs a Lifestar ride to the hospital.”
