WEST HAVEN - A motivational speech in West Hartford featured a woman with a rare disease that's not stopping her from conquering life's obstacles.

She wrote a memoir about life while simultaneously losing both her sight and hearing .

Rebecca Alexander was born with a rare genetic mutation called Usher Syndrome Type 3.

Alexander has been simultaneously losing her ability to see and hear since she was a child and was told she would be completely blind and deaf by 30.

Still, that hasn't stopped Alexander from publishing a memoir about her life. She is also a psychotherapist, spin instructor and athlete.
