WINSTED -- State police are investigating the death of a woman found in a home Monday morning.

Police were called to Moore Avenue and found Patricia Nikstad, 58, dead.

Her husband, Jim, is the one who called police. Jim told local police Pat fell down the stairs, but Winchester Police  Chief William Fitzgerald said "certain things did not add up" in the initial review of the scene. Police are waiting on autopsy results to see if they can confirm Jim's claims.

State Police Major crimes squad and the district attorney's office are investigating after they found the woman's body at the bottom ofa flight of stairs.

The medical examiners office will be conducting the autopsy.

Neighbors say Patricia Nikstad had a big drinking problem, and used to constantly ask for rides to the package store.

"You see them, you say hello, and then you find out something's going on," neighbor Art Melycher said. "Is it a regular fall or what, who knows?"

Winchester Police say Jim Nikstad has been cooperating with the investigation.
