HARTFORD -- Two people arrested on for an incident where a 2-year-old child was left alone appeared in court Monday.

Ignacio Castro, 28, was charged with risk of an injury to a minor and his bail was set at $100,000. Hendyliz Marrero, 24, was charged with risk of an injury to a minor and her bail was set at $100,000.

According to court paperwork, Marrero claims she was on way home from work, while Castro claims he was headed to a job interview.

On Friday at around 8:30 a.m. police responded to a report of a child left home alone.

A woman called 911 to report that a little girl had answered her door, and said no one else was home.

When officers got to the home, they spoke with a neighbor who lived on the first floor who said she was alerted by her own children that water was leaking into their apartment from the ceiling.

Police checked on her neighbors and found a 2-year-old left home alone in deplorable conditions in a second-floor apartment.

There were two small dogs inside and the apartment was covered with feces and urine.

Candace Wilkins, a downstairs neighbor, told FOX 61 the girl was, "covered in feces. It didn't look like injuries, just dirty. She was running around. You could hear the little footsteps."

Wilkins went on to say, "It wasn't a pretty sight. It wasn't very clean. They were living their own lifestyle."

There were also extension cords across the floor, an open window, razor blades, beer bottles on the floor and dirty dishes piled up in the sink.

The 2-year-old was taken to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center for evaluation then placed in the home of another family member while the Connecticut Department of Children and Families investigates.
