NEW LONDON–Law enforcement officials in southeastern Connecticut have teamed up to combat the recent spike in heroin overdoses.

In just a week nearly 15 overdoses were reported in New London alone, and one person died.

Police chiefs and leaders met this week to discuss programs to implement and ways to fight the drug problem.

The participating departments include: Groton Town Police, Groton City Police, Norwich Police, Waterford Police, Ledyard Police, Mohegan Tribal Police, New London Police, Stonington Police, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Police, Montville Police, East Lyme Police and the Connecticut State Police.

Together with the Statewide Narcotics Task Force, New London County State’s Attorney’s Office and High Intensity Drug Trafficking Initiative, the departments are exploring opportunities to offer alternative treatments to victims, and also ways to enforce drug laws.

Each department each department pledged additional personnel and resources to target the problem and increase enforcement.

“This problem is affecting all of our communities, and we are seeing people in all stages of life, across socio-economic lines suffering, and in some cases, dying from this addiction. As a group, the police chiefs in southeastern Connecticut recognizes that we are not dealing with a problem unique to each of our towns–it is a regional problem and we are looking to work together to address this problem as a group,” said Town of Groton Police Chief Louis J. Fusaro.
