GROTON — The U.S. Navy says the commander of an attack submarine based in Groton, has been relieved of his duties due to poor performance.

Navy Cmdr. Edward Byers was dismissed Tuesday as the officer in charge of USS Dallas.

The Navy says Byers was reassigned to the staff of the Undersea Warfare Development Center at the Navy base in Groton because superiors had lost confidence in his ability to command.

The officer who skippered the submarine before Byers, Capt. Jack Houdeshell, has been assigned to return as its commanding officer. He has been working as deputy commander of a submarine squadron.

Dallas is one of 16 nuclear-powered submarines based in Groton.
