MERIDEN — Police said a man’s leg was severed after he was pinned between two cars during a crash.

The Hartford Courant reported 35-year-old Benjamin Ariza was standing between an SUV and a van around 10:45 p.m. Friday on Route 5 when the van was struck from behind by a Nissan Titan. Ariza had exited the SUV and was waiting to cross the street.

The crash pinned Ariza’s legs between the two vehicles, severing his left leg.

Ariza was taken to Hartford Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

Police said the driver of the Nissan, 32-year-old Danny Perez, failed a field sobriety test.

Perez was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, second-degree assault with a motor vehicle and reckless driving. He’s being held on $20,000 bond.
