BRIDGEPORT — The owner of the last coal-burning plant in Connecticut says it has won a key approval for its plan to transition to natural gas.
PSEG says electric grid operator ISO New England has accepted its proposal to begin construction of a gas-fired plant in 2017.
The plant at the existing Bridgeport Harbor Station site is expected to begin supplying energy by 2020.
The Connecticut Post reports PSEG has agreed to shutter the 47-year-old coal plant by 2021 if a gas plant is supported by city officials and environmental groups.
Richard Lopriore, president of PSEG Fossil, says Thursday’s announcement is “a true win for Bridgeport.”
