MAVERICK COUNTY, Texas — Texas authorities said the man who shot and killed a Connecticut State trooper is unlikely to be charged.

The Portland Herald said police determined that the shooting was accidental.

Stephen Davis of Hebron, a veteran Connecticut State Police trooper, was killed in a hunting accident Saturday.

State Police said Davis was shot and killed by another hunter near Cinco Ranch. Alvin Chase of Warren, Maine told investigators from the United States Border Patrol, that he shot at what he thought was a wild hog and accidentally struck Davis.

Chase said he approached Davis and noticed he was on his hands and knees on the ground. Davis was found with an apparent wound to the left side of his torso. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:22 p.m.

Maverick County is a popular location for deer and other animal  hunters.
