HARTFORD -- The below-zero cold isn’t just a nuisance to go out in, spending too much time outdoors can be dangerous, so Associated Supermarkets in Hartford isn’t taking chances and is making sure you stay inside.

The grocery store is offering free food deliveries through the winter, according to co-owner George Anthony.

In order to take advantage of the offer, you must call the store, place your order, pay over the phone, and your food will be on its way.

“If you call me for $5, it might take a little longer to get there but if you call me and really need that assistance, I`m gonna make it happen,”  Anthony said.

As temperatures started to really go down, the idea came up, and so did the concern for the elderly in Hartford.

“From Tuscan Homes, to St. Monica’s to Ida B. Wells, we are surrounded by elderly housing complexes.” according to Co-owner Louinel Sterling.

The delivery is advertised for residents in the Hartford area, but Anthony said he’s willing to go the extra mile.

“I’ve been homeless, so I know what it is to be hungry,” Anthony said. “I’ve worked at shelters, I just know that, it's difficult getting out, transportation is hard, everyone doesn't have a car, everyone can`t get on the bus, you know, it's hard for people.”

The owners of the supermarket see this as a way of giving back.

“We`re here to help the community, trying to build our community back,” Anthony said. “We’ve lost a lot, so somebody's got to start. I'm willing to take that step.”

The grocery store is located at 259 Barbour Street in Hartford. Store hours are 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.

In order to place a delivery you must call the store at 860-906-1814.

You can pay for your groceries with a debit, credit or EBT card, and the delivery is at no charge.
