ENFIELD -- A pedestrian died after being hit by a small school bus in Enfield on Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 6:15 a.m. on Route 5, just north of the I-91 exit 46 interchange. The road was closed for several hours.

A relative who stopped by the scene told FOX 61 that the victim lived in the area and has a daughter. She believed he was walking home from work when he was hit.

A representative from Cracker Barrel confirmed the victim was a long-time employee, identifying him as Paul Phillips. Co-workers said he worked at the restaurant's East Windsor location for about 14 years and that much, if not all of Phillip's time there was as a nighttime maintenance man. They said they are deeply saddened by Phillips' death.

Police said he was walking along the road with another man who was not injured. Phillips' companion is cooperating with police, as is the bus driver, said investigators.

So far, no charges have been filed.

Enfield's superintendent confirms no students were on the bus at the time of the accident.
