HARTFORD - Community college students say what's good for state university students ought to be good enough for them.

State universities, like UCONN and CCSU, have actual police departments, and the legislature is considering a proposal to give community colleges in Connecticut the choice to have armed guards, who were former police officers.

The president of Connecticut State Colleges and Universities, Mark Ojakian, said armed guards wouldn't just be a deterrent, they would also be able to respond to a threat.

"You have to call, your local police or your state police, it takes a long time for folks to get there, especially in some of our more remote campuses," Ojakian said.

Ojakian pointed out that Connecticut's community colleges would decide for themselves if they want armed guards, and that armed guards shouldn't increase the cost of getting a higher education.
